Sasha and Malia, we were seven when our beloved grandfather was sworn in as the 41st President of the United States. We stood proudly on the platform, our tiny hands icicles, as we lived history. We listened intently to the words spoken on Inauguration Day service, duty, honor. But being seven, we didn't quite understand the gravity of the position our Grandfather was committing to. We watched as the bands marched by -- the red, white, and blue streamers welcoming us to a new role: the family members of a President.

We also first saw the White House through the innocent, optimistic eyes of children. We stood on the North Lawn gazing with wonder at her grand portico. The White House was alive with devoted and loving people, many of whom had worked in her halls for decades. Three of the White House ushers, Buddy, Ramsey, and "Smiley", greeted us when we stepped into her intimidating hallway. Their laughter and embraces made us feel welcome right away. Sasha and Malia, here is some advice to you from two sisters who have stood where you will stand and who have lived where you will live:

-- Surround yourself with loyal friends. They'll protect and calm you and join in on some of the fun, and appreciate the history.
-- If you're traveling with your parents over Halloween, don't let it stop you from doing what you would normally do. Dress up in some imaginative, elaborate costume (if you are like us a pack of Juicy Fruit and a Vampiress) and trick-or-treat down the plane aisle.
-- If you ever need a hug, go find Ramsey. If you want to talk football, look for Buddy. And, if you just need a smile, look for "Smiley."
-- And, a note on White House puppies--our sweet puppy Spot was nursed on the lawn of the White House. And then of course, there's Barney, who most recently bit a reporter. Cherish your animals because sometimes you'll need the quiet comfort that only animals can provide.
-- Slide down the banister of the solarium, go to T-ball games, have swimming parties, and play Sardines on the White House lawn. Have fun and enjoy your childhood in such a magical place to live and play.
-- When your dad throws out the first pitch for the Yankees, go to the game.
-- In fact, go to anything and everything you possibly can: the Kennedy Center for theater, State Dinners, Christmas parties (the White House staff party is our favorite!), museum openings, arrival ceremonies, and walks around the monuments. Just go. Four years goes by so fast, so absorb it all, enjoy it all!

For four years, we spent our childhood holidays and vacations in the historic house. We could almost feel the presence of all the great men and women who had lived here before us. When we played house, we sat behind the East sitting room's massive curtains as the light poured in illuminating her yellow walls. Our seven-year-old imaginations soared as we played in the enormous, beautiful rooms; our dreams, our games, as romantic as her surroundings. At night, the house sang us quiet songs through the chimneys as we fell asleep.

In late December, when snow blanketed the front lawn, all of our cousins overtook the White House. Thirteen children between the ages of two and 12 ran throughout her halls, energized by the crispness in the air and the spirit of the season. Every room smelled of pine; the entire house was adorned with thistle; garlands wound around every banister. We sat on her grand staircase and spied on the holiday dancing below. Hours were spent playing hide-and-go-seek. We used a stage in the grand ballroom to produce a play about Santa and his reindeer. We watched as the National Christmas Tree was lit and admired the chef as he put the final icing on the gingerbread house.

When it was time, we left the White House. We said our goodbyes to her and to Washington. We weren't sure if we would spend time among her historical walls again, or ever walk the National Mall, admiring the cherry blossoms that resembled puffs of cotton candy. But we did return. This time we were 18. The White House welcomed us back and there is no doubt that it is a magical place at any age.

As older girls, we were constantly inspired by the amazing people we met, politicians and great philosophers like Vaclav Havel. We dined with royalty, heads of states, authors, and activists. We even met the Queen of England and managed to see the Texas Longhorns after they won the National Championship. We traveled with our parents to foreign lands and were deeply moved by what we saw. Trips to Africa inspired and motivated us to begin working with HIV/AIDS and the rights of women and children all over the world.

Now, the White House ballrooms were filled with energy and music as we danced. The East sitting room became a peaceful place to read and study. We ran on the track in the front lawn, and squared off in sisterly bowling duels down in the basement alley.
This Christmas, with the enchanting smell of the holidays encompassing her halls, we will again be saying our good-byes to the White House. Sasha and Malia, it is your turn now to fill the White House with laughter.

And finally, although it's an honor and full of so many extraordinary opportunities, it isn't always easy being a member of the club you are about to join. Our dad, like yours, is a man of great integrity and love; a man who always put us first. We still see him now as we did when we were seven: as our loving daddy. Our Dad, who read to us nightly, taught us how to score tedious baseball games. He is our father, not the sketch in a paper or part of a skit on TV. Many people will think they know him, but they have no idea how he felt the day you were born, the pride he felt on your first day of school, or how much you both love being his daughters. So here is our most important piece of advice: remember who your dad really is.

Legends Bar and Grill at 3530 Decoursey Avenue, Covington, Kentucky will be hosting three fund raising events to benefit the 2009 Police Unity Tour.

Event dates:

January 21st, 2009 February 25th, 2009 March 4th, 2009

The Unity Tour is a 300 mile bicycle ride that’s begins at Ground Zero in downtown New York City and ends at the National Police Memorial in our Nation’s Capitol. The purpose of the ride is to raise funds to support the National Memorial which honors law enforcement officers that have given their lives in service to their communities.

15% of all food sales from Legends on these dates will go towards the Northern Kentucky Unity Tour Team. The Northern Kentucky team is comprised of riders from the Covington Police Department, Kentucky Probation and Parole and the Kentucky State Fraternal Order of Police.

My weekend went well. Usually the weekend is the time of the week that
is really a struggle for me to eat and drink anything that might be good for me..
but drinking the Smartwater and eating on a regular schedule really gave me

This weekend was great! I went on a road trip and having Smartwater with me made things so easy! My drive went smoother, I was more awake and didn’t suffer my usual feeling of drowsiness when driving for a long period of time. Smartwater bottles are such a great size! The last few days have been good. As I gear up for my daughter’s 7th birthday party this weekend, I was thinking how I could incorporate healthy choices. This week has been tough. Work has been busy and a have a cold that just won’t go away. Ick.
But I’m a little proud of myself. I’ve been drinking the Smartwater AND haven’t been eating fast food…though I’ve been temped.
I’m not someone who eats salad or anything, really, that could be considered good for you. So my way is to put myself on a schedule
and control portions….I’m even getting up earlier then usual so that I have time for breakfast. So far, so good.

TAMPA - Mom thinks her boy is a catch, so much so she shells out 500 bucks for an ad in The Tampa Tribune.
"ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS … a WIFE for my SON," it begins.
Signed Christmas Mother-in Law, the plea continues: "I'm sad that he's alone, a 37 year old handsome Tampa professional …
"Help me find him a wife!"
Prospective brides are asked to contact a post office box in Virginia.
Claudia, the mother-in-law-in-waiting, is a tad concerned about the family's safety. One never knows who might show up at your door, whether you're a good-looking Tampa bachelor or his loving family up in Virginia.
So we're going with no last names for this story.
Claudia swears there's nothing wrong with her son.
"He's such a good boy," she says. "He's so good-hearted, so good-looking. He's got a good job."
So far, so good, but she is his mother. Seeing is believing.
With visions of a daughter-in-law dancing in her head, Claudia agrees to get her son to contact the newspaper for a story. Surely, that will help.
Jason sounds nice and normal over the phone. No criminal record, either. Time to meet. He says to look for the guy with the goatee. Hair color?
"What hair?" he deadpans.
It turns out he's OK with his mother's meddling.
"I figured it was worth a shot," he says.
Jason has been looking for Mrs. Right since 2003, when he got divorced from Mrs. Wrong. There have been a few girlfriends, but "nothing that has panned out."
A Leo, he considers himself outgoing and passionate. He loves the outdoors, beach and mountains.
And Mom's right, he's good-hearted. He volunteers with a group that works with teens with Down syndrome, taking them to the movies and showing them how to make change at the store.
"I don't have kids," he explains. "And that's something I would like in the near future."
Mom's right about the job, too. Jason's a software marketing manager. He was even employee of the month.
He's a graduate of Bloomingdale High and the University of South Florida. He likes '80s music and the occasional Captain Morgan with Diet Coke.
So far, he says, his mother has received only three responses to her ad. Two came from other mothers; one with a daughter, who sounds promising; the other, a son. She wants the names of the women Jason decides not to date.
Jason is not deterred. But for Claudia, it's a sign that there aren't many single women in Tampa. Or that they just aren't adventurous.
"I feel like sometimes you just need to put yourself out there, regardless of the chance you're taking," Claudia says in an e-mail. "You will never know what you might have missed if you don't."

Group seeks more toys for tots

HAMILTON — With Christmas just weeks away, hundreds of Butler County children are in danger of having no gifts under the tree.
Nearly 700 families have signed up for holiday help through The Lighthouse church in Hamilton, but their Christmas wish may not come true if the church doesn't get enough donations in the next 15 days.
"We have 647 names on the list now and we're still getting phone calls every day," said Sonny Hurd, pastor of the Ridgelawn Avenue church. "We just need help."
Hurd has relied on the Butler/Warren Marine Corps Toys for Tots program to help sponsor youth for the past six years.
But donations to Toys for Tots are down because of the economy, and the organization is turning groups away.
Karen Tannreuther, program coordinator for the local Toys for Tots, said more than 3,000 children have signed up for assistance this year, and officials fear they won't be able to serve them all.
"(The Lighthouse) is not the only organization that I've said I'm not going to be able to service," said Tannreuther, a Monroe resident. "Donations aren't coming in like they normally do. I don't want to turn anyone away, but it's better to give them a heads up now than wait until the last minute."
Hurd said Mercy Franciscan at St. Raphael in Hamilton has offered to help 100 of the children on the list.
But he worries other children will have to go without.
"Parents and grandparents say these are the only toys these kids are going to get," he said. "My biggest fear is that I'm going to have to call these people and say: 'Sorry I can't help you.'"

Baby Boomer Survivors

To all the kids who survived the 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!
First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes. Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-base paints. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our heads.
As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes. Riding in the back of a pick-up truck on a warm day was always a special treat. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this.
We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar. And, we weren't overweight. WHY? Because we were always outside playing...that's why!
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. And, we were O.K.. We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride them down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times,we learned to solve the problem.
We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet and no chat rooms. WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them! We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.
We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them. Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law! These gene rations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever.. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all. If YOU are one of them? CONGRATULATIONS!
You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.
Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?

Fact Check: McCain, Obama Charges and Countercharges
ABC News Fact Checks Claims Made By White House Contenders During Second Presidential Debate

Oct. 7, 2008 —
ABC News independently checked some of the claims made by John McCain and Barack Obama during the debate tonight.
With reporting by the ABC News Fact Check team John Berman, Lisa Chinn, Dennis Dunlavey, Brian Hartman, Tom Giusto, Kimberley Randolph, Z. Byron Wolf, Justin Rood, Teddy Davis, Karen Travers, Kirit Radia, Luis Martinez, Ariane deVogue, Arlette Saenz, Reynolds Holding and Jerika Richardson.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac Money
Early in the debate tonight, McCain charged that Obama had the second highest donations of anyone in the Senate from troubled mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
TRUE. The Illinois senator has received $126,349 ($120,349 from employees and $6,000 from Political Action Committees or PACs) since he joined the Senate in 2005, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. His total is the second largest of any member of Congress, right behind Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., at $165,400.
McCain has received $21,550 from employees (nothing from PACs) since 1989 -- a period 14 years longer than Obama has been in the Senate -- according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Pork Barrell Spending
McCain charged that Obama was guilty of driving up pork barrel spending -- government spending on programs that benefit his state of Illinois. McCain said, "While we were working to eliminate these pork barrel earmarks, he voted for nearly a billion dollars in pork barrel earmark projects including, by the way, $3 million for an overhead projector at a planetarium in Chicago, Ill."
TRUE: In July 2007, Obama requested a $3 million earmark for the Adler Planetarium to repair the 40-year-old projector to the Sky Theater, as detailed on his Web site.
AND FALSE: As to the first part of the claim, that Obama voted for nearly a billion dollars in pork barrel earmark projects, any senator, including McCain, who casts a vote to pass spending bills, in effect, votes for far more than that.
But if McCain misspoke and meant to say that Obama requested nearly a billion in earmarks, he's not even close. According to the Citizens Against Government Waste's annual Pig Book for 2008 Appropriations, Obama requested 53 earmarks worth a total of $97.4 million.

Small Businesses and Taxes
Obama defended his tax plan against McCain's charge that "Obama's secret that you don't know is that his tax increases will increase taxes on 50 percent of small business revenue." Obama responded that "only a few percent of small businesses make more than $250,000 a year. So, the vast majority of small businesses would get a tax cut under my plan." TRUE...AND TRUE: Only 4.3 percent of the total U.S. businesses are small businesses that make more than $250,000 a year, according to tax data. It's also possible that a majority of "small business revenue" comes from these firms. Obama is referring to the number of firms, McCain is referring to the concentration of revenue at the top end of the small business food chain. Both managed to make the facts work for their arguments.
Pakistan
McCain charged that "Sen. Obama likes to talk loudly. In fact, he said he wants to announce that he's going to attack Pakistan."
FALSE: Obama has not said that he would "attack Pakistan," but he has said that if Pakistan was unwilling or unable to move in on Osama bin Laden, he would.

This charge started with a speech Obama gave on Aug. 1, 2007, called "The War We Need To Win," in which he said: "I understand that President Musharraf has his own challenges. But let me make this clear. There are terrorists holed up in those mountains who murdered 3,000 Americans. They are plotting to strike again. It was a terrible mistake to fail to act when we had a chance to take out an al Qaeda leadership meeting in 2005. If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf won't act, we will."
Computers

When asked what he would do to make Congress move quickly to address the environment, Obama said, "This is one of the biggest challenges of our time, and it's absolutely critical we understand it's not a challenge, it's an opportunity ... we can do it but we're gonna have to make an investment. The same way the computer was invented by a bunch of government scientists." Were computers invented by the government?
FALSE: The Mark I, widely considered to be the first digital computer, was developed by Harvard scientist Howard Aiken working in conjunction with IBM from 1939 to 1944.
A year later came the final assembly of the ENIAC, a computer developed by scientists at the University of Pennsylvania who were under contract with the U.S. Army in order to more rapidly compute firing and bombing tables.
Lebanon

McCain said, "In Lebanon, I stood up to President Reagan, my hero, and said if we send Marines in there, how can we possibly beneficially affect the situation, and said we shouldn't. Unfortunately, almost 300 brave young Marines were killed."
FALSE: This is an issue that came up in the first presidential debate, as well. And in both cases, McCain exaggerates his position. Marines were already in Lebanon when McCain arrived on Capitol Hill in 1983, and his vote was to prevent invoking the War Powers Act to extend the Marines already deployed. McCain did vote against that, but as he did in the first debate, McCain is wrong to imply that he opposed sending the Marines to Lebanon.
Town Meeting?

Perhaps the biggest exagerration of the night came from the debate organizers, who called the format a "town meeting." Of the 21 questions asked during the 90-minute debate, nine came from moderator Tom Brokaw, eight from the live audience in the hall and four from Internet users.
