In February, our thoughts turn to love and romance, especially as Valentine's Day approaches. My column this month features the each zodiac sign in relationship to love and romance. If you have a question about your own relationship or if you're looking for love, be sure to click the link to my web site.
The Signs In LoveBy Maria Shaw
The Aries GuyIf an Aries guy catches your eye, don't act overly excited! Be subtle but make sure he notices you. If you're too aggressive, he'll lose interest. He wants to be the "hunter" in the game of love. This guy enjoys spur of the moment trysts, creative love-making and a woman that’s not afraid of her own sexuality. At the same time, you'll have to act like he’s the only man you've ever slept with (even though we know better). If you're weepy, whiny or clingy, he'll run. So be optimistic, ambitious and independent if you want to win his affections. It’s important you allow him to put some effort in the relationship too. If he spends time doing things for you, he'll have a vested interest in it. Don't forget, Aries men are very competitive and like to be number one at everything. So once you've captured his heart, its okay to let him know he’s the best lover as well as the most handsome and successful man you've ever known. The Aries WomanIn a committed relationship, the Aries woman not only needs to know that she’s number one in your life, she needs to "feel" it. This sassy, no-nonsense gal admires a strong, assertive man. Even though she likes to wear the pants in the family and can be quite bossy, you shouldn't give into every whim or she'll think you're a wimp. The Ram respects you when you stand up to her...especially when she’s acting like a prima Donna. But do not take this woman for granted. If she feels neglected, she'll look for attention elsewhere. She is passionate and craves excitement. Live life a little less predictable. Keep your Aries woman on her toes and you'll keep her heart forever. The Taurus Man This guy is hard to catch but easy to keep. It may take him a while to ask you out but once he has his heart set on you, watch out! Nothing will stand in his way to win you over. He’s very determined yet patient. To win his undying devotion, you must be a real lady. Make him work for a first kiss. Never sleep with a Taurus early on in a relationship. He appreciates what he has to work for! The way to a Taurus’ heart is through his eyes and stomach. Make him lots of home cooked meals. Since Bulls are creatures of habit, schedule dinner every Sunday. Make Friday night your movie date. The more he develops a regular schedule or pattern with you, the less likely he is to change it. Taurus men do have a jealous streak. Some think of their girlfriends and wives as their possessions. They will get riled if they think someone is "after" your affections. Likewise, the Taurus guy needs to feel that you are faithful to him. He hates feeling insecure. He’s not one that needs to keep the chase going, like an Aries does. Once he makes up his mind about you, he is most happy to comfortably settle in for the long haul.
The Taurus Woman Consistency is very important if you're going to be in a relationship with a Taurus woman. Be on time for dates and fulfill promises. If you say you are going to call, then make sure you do. Don't break dates unless there’s a do or die emergency. Security is also important to Taurus. You don't have to be Donald Trump but you should be ambitious and be able to support a household, drive a decent vehicle and afford a few luxuries every now and then. A Taurus woman is a sensuous creature by nature but that doesn't mean she’s into bed-hopping. Sure, sex is vital to a healthy relationship for her, but she would rather be with one man and settle into a comfortable routine than date a different Casanova every night. She’s always looking toward the future. She’s looking for someone with the same core values that she possesses; fidelity, honesty and a strong motivation to afford nice things. She is a domesticated sign so her home and family will be very important. She is stubborn but bends for love. She can be patient and your biggest cheerleader if she sees potential in you. Like Taurus men, the women are just as jealous and possessive. Don't anger them or you'll be sorry. She actually prefers peace and harmony. If you live a crazy lifestyle in constant chaos, this woman is not for you. But if you are looking for stability, security, and lots of affection and don't mind being bossed around a bit, then this is your gal!

GeminiThe Gemini GuyHe’s a big flirt and a little boy who never ever wants to grow up. Yup, he can stretch the truth if it serves his purpose but most of the time, he’s a straight shooter and pretty smart. He knows a little about a lot of things. If you really like this guy, keep him guessing and your love life interesting. Since Gemini are always changing their minds, you need to reinvent yourself more than once. He likes trying new things. He gets excited about his next big adventure. He can be fickle in love and you'll have to ignore his moodiness every now and then. Remember, he has two personalities so you'll need to date them both! He may have ex girlfriends who are now "just friends". Don't demand that he give them up too soon. He'll give you the boot. He makes a good friend and a great lover all rolled into one (or two). The best thing? He’s a communicator. Unlike most men, Mr. Gemini loves to share his feelings!
The Gemini WomanShe’s fun and flirty and can't keep her mouth shut. She’s always gabbing about something and she’s up on current events. In love, she wants a guy that will really listen to her; someone who can hold her interest. That’s a chore because her interests are always changing. She’s one smart cookie and not afraid to use her brains and beauty to get ahead. When in love, she wants her partner to be her best friend and someone she can share everything with. She appreciates a heart felt card or a love letter even more so than candy and flowers. She'll stick by you through a crisis because she’s a true humanitarian. But later, when things are settled and if the relationship gets boring, she may make excuses to leave. Her constant thirst for growth and learning new things is something that must be met for this lady to be happy and feel fulfilled. She'll always be a little girl at heart but she’s definitely a passionate woman, when she finds herself in a meaningful relationship.Best Bets - Aquarius, Libra, LeoFast Fizzles - Pisces, VirgoOpposite Attraction -SagittariusPast Life Probability -TaurusBest Times of the Year for loveSeptember 23- October 22November 22- December 21Got a personal question Gemini? Cancer The Cancer Man -This guy is great husband and father material. He’s kind, protective, emotional and sensitive so make sure you don't hurt his feelings. He’s looking for a wife that reminds him of his mother. You should like kids and dogs and be dedicated to making a house a home….because that‘s where he expects you to spend most of your time!. To attract this kind of a guy, don't be too bold or pushy. Be feminine…very lady like. He wants a woman he can take home to mom. Her approval is important. If Mama likes you, you're "in". Hopefully he’s not a Mama’s boy but if he is, know that you will be spending every Sunday with her and maybe a few vacations too. It’s not a good idea to talk about all the men you've dated or slept with. Even though he knows better, the Cancer man wants to think he’s the only one you've ever been with. He doesn't want you to have a "past"
The Cancer Woman - Old boyfriends and ex-husbands will show up on her doorstep when she least expects them. Once a man has been wooed by a Cancer’s charms, it’s hard to let go. Even if years have passed, the memories of this nurturing, old fashioned type gal, don't escape these men. Why? Because a Cancer woman is the best at playing the role of the good wife and mother. That’s what she was born to do…among other things. She’s maternal to everyone so men feel loved and cared for. If you want to win her heart, you must be a gentleman. Even if you're a scoundrel, at least act like a gentleman around her. Oh, yes and be very romantic too. The Cancer woman loves romance. Cards, stuffed animals, concert ticket stubs, etc. She'll save every thing you give her. She’s looking for a guy that’s dependable, hard working, can support a family and someone she can trust. She'll know when she first meets you if you're marriage material or not. She doesn't have to have second date to determine if you're "the one". Let her know that she is the most beautiful woman you've ever dated and that you love her more than you‘ve loved anyone in your whole, entire life. She’s the marrying type so tell her know how important it is for you to settle down one day and have kids. Fuss over her cooking. Compliment her figure. When she gets moody, hold her. Don't let full moons destroy the relationship. Cancer women get irrational when there’s a full moon or very sensitive over the least little things.

LeoThe Leo ManBoth the male and female lions are known to have the most generous hearts of all the zodiac. They give 150% in a relationship but if they feel neglected, Leos become sourpusses. A Leo man is a strong man. Not only physically, but also in spirit. His reputation is very important. He needs to be respected for his hard work, good looks or other attributes he has no problem boasting about. So tell him how wonderful he is. Listen to him talk about himself. Put him on a pedestal and let him take the lead. Leos are very proud people. A Leo man works hard to take care of his family and give them the best that money can provide. He often judges his success on how well he can provide for the family. He also likes to be in charge at home. His house is his castle and he sees everyone in it as his loyal and faithful followers.
The Leo WomanThe Lioness wants and expects to be treated like a princess. She’s sets high standards for herself and won't settle for anything less than she feels she deserves. She often will wear her heart on her sleeve and believes in true love. She can be intensely passionate about life, love and her career. The Lioness loves to be pampered and has a tendency to be a shopaholic. She is a proud, strong willed woman with a creative nature. She lives life for the moment. She loves her friends and family and has a heart of gold. Yes, she can be high maintenance...but worth it!Best Bets - Sagittarius, Gemini, Libra, AriesFast Fizzles - Scorpio, TaurusOpposite Attraction - AquariusPast Life Probability - CancerBest Times of the Year for loveNovember 22- December 21January 21- February 20

VirgoThe Virgo ManIn love, they are picky about who they choose to settle down with but once they make a commitment, usually don't stray. They expect the same from their partners. Some are shy and seem hard to get to know. Many people mistake Virgo’s shyness for a snobbish attitude. But that’s not usually the case. The Virgo is just covering up an insecure feeling with an air of aloofness. Mr. Virgo is intelligent and he loves a woman who can hold her own in a conversation. He loses patience with air heads. He doesn't like women who come on too strong. A slow, subtle approach is best. Virgos are not called the "virgins" for nothing you know! They're not prudes but are respectable. If you're trying to attract a Virgo guy, keep your car clean and your home immaculate. He is fussy, nit-picky and freaks out if he comes across clutter and dirt. It’s okay to be a little needy because this guy loves to rescue you. He enjoys being your handy man and helping out. Virgo men are not prone to cheat but when they do, it’s usually because they do not feel they are needed any longer by their partner.
The Virgo Woman - Like her male counterpart, the Virgo woman is particular about how her guy looks. Only certain "types" will she find attractive. Now, that doesn't mean he has to look like Brad Pitt. Often the "Average Joe" stands a good chance, especially if he shares the same values as Miss Virgo; honesty, loyalty and family tradition. In some cases these gals seem to draw all of the bad boys who they feel need rescuing. Then they hang on to these relationships, long past their prime, in hopes their partner will change. So, if you have a prison record, are unemployed or need immediate help, you have a decent chance at getting to know a Virgo lady! All kidding aside, most Virgo do appreciate a man with good taste; someone who is a gentleman and knows how to treat a woman. They desperately hope that chivalry isn't dead. She’s looking for a down to earth, logical stable type of guy. When she falls for one, she can be the most attentive, caring lover in the world; sometimes to the point of overbearing. But her over zealous attitude for making her partner’s life perfect is just her way of showing love. She worries about him. She gives him tons of advice. She puts up with a lot...more so than most women, all to prove her love. LibraThe Libra Man- He’s not the easiest guy to please because he has such high standards when it comes to the woman he chooses to be marry. All of his life, he’s had this idea of what his perfect woman should be. No woman alive could fill the bill but he won't give up trying to find her. He’s scared of making a commitment although he desperately wants one. Just in case someone better or prettier or smarter comes along...he chooses to stay single and keep searching. But once he falls head over heels in love, seldom does he fall out of love. Her prefers to be in a relationship and will be a passionate, romantic, silly sort of lover. The Libra Woman - Is very feminine. No matter what age, she possesses an air about her that brings out the best in men. They'll open car doors for her, carry her groceries and bend over backwards to help this delicate creature out. Whoa! She’s not as fragile as she appears. She is very smart and socially adept as she can strike up a conversation with almost anyone. She longs to be in love forever and ever Amen. She'll dote on her man and go out of her way to make sure he’s happy. She expects the same in return. Scorpio
The Scorpio ManBeneath his cool, calm exterior lies a deep intensity and passion that can't be matched by other signs of the zodiac. You need to earn his trust. It may take some time because Scorpio trusts no one. Consistency is the key. Scorpio men can be sexy, down to earth but sometimes, a bit of a challenge. He is intuitive. So don't lie or manipulate him. He'll catch on right away. This guy is a good provider, providing he makes most of the decisions in a partnership. He is strong yet sensitive. His moodiness could drive you crazy but his other qualities will make up for them. Don't attempt to make his jealous. He is paranoid anyway and smells evil even when it doesn't exist. Plus, you'll pay for it! Mr. Scorpio likes to feel safe and in control in a relationship. After time, your Scorpio man will be a loyal, loving and devoted mate. (As long as he thinks he’s getting his way). Sex is very important to him. Not just the act itself but the sexual intimacy is what this man craves. It is through sex, he can lose control and allow his intense emotions to show.
The Scorpio WomanShe, like her male counterpart, needs to be able to trust you completely before she gives her heart away. Make sure you are up for such a relationship because it will be intense to say the least. She is like no woman you've ever known before. Be honest. She'll know if you're lying. Be attentive and on time. If you make a promise, keep it. Scorpio don't forget. She is super sensitive but you won't know if and when you hurt her feelings. She may act as if everything is fine and then a few days later, after she has time to brood, you'll get "stung". Her poker will never reveal if she’s really interested in you. But once you seduce her (or she seduces you), you'll know for sure where this intense woman stands. It will be all or nothing as far as are relationship goes. Oh and all of the rumors you've heard about Scorpio’s sexual appetite are mostly true. So, make sure you can keep up with her! Once she feels safe with you, she will be an extremely loyal and a committed partner. However, she needs to have control at all times but she loses interest in wimps. So one must walk a fine line between being strong and willing to bend. SagittariusThe Sagittarius ManHe’s a little boy that will never grow up. Ever heard of the Peter Pan syndrome?! He makes you feel as if you're a princess when you're with him. But understand no one will tie him down. The way to catch these career bachelors is to be their best friend. Join in on the activities he prefers to do. Don't talk about commitment or the future. Let him bring it up and when he does, don't act overanxious. Keep the relationship interesting. If things fall into a rut, the Sagittarius will undoubtedly look for greener pastures. Be upbeat, positive and ready to change your schedule at a moment’s notice, without complaining (Sag men hate naggers). These guys don't want to feel fenced in. They prefer women who are independent, carefree and can roll with the punches. Ex-girlfriends will call him. So make sure you're confident enough within yourself to handle the attention this Prince Charming will receive. The Sagittarius WomanShe likes her independence. She’s honest, direct and seldom take tips from Martha Stewart. To woo an Archer woman, you need to bring "more" excitement to her life. She already has tons of friends and a hectic schedule. She needs someone who can "add" to her existence, yet not compete with it. You must be a passionate person too. If you're athletic, consider it a plus because this gal has a sporty side. If you look hot in a pair of blue jeans and a crisp white T-shirt, you get bonus points. Keep any complaints and your anti-depression pills to yourself. This lady looks at everything in a positive light. The glass is half full, not half empty. Ms. Sagittarius is looking for a lover, a best friend, and a confident all wrapped into one neat package. Don't make her feel trapped, attempt to smother her or tell her what she’s going to do and when. She'll bolt for the nearest exit. Keep her laughing. A sense of humor goes a long way with this gal.

CapricornThe Capricorn ManCapricorn men are the strong silent types. But beneath their cool exterior is a guy who really wants to fall in love with his "perfect woman". That woman should be a real lady by all appearances with a respectable reputation and a bit conservative. He’s also looking for some that’s ambitious as he is. He likes to be in charge and can be a bit chauvinistic. Sometimes he appears cheap. He thinks of himself as thrifty and a good saver. He’s a logical man. He probably has a strong work ethic so go ahead and support his career ideals. Gain his trust and respect and the rest is easy. He’s looking for a long term commitment. Even though he is cautious of letting his heart get the best of him, he does wants marriage and the white picket fence one day.
The Capricorn WomanShe’s a no-nonsense, "manner-of-fact" type of gal who knows what she wants and goes after it. She is "down to Earth", logical and cautious regarding love and relationships. But once a Capricorn woman gives her heart away, it’s usually for keeps. She appreciates the nicer things that life can afford and her standards are very high. A man will have to prove himself worthy of her dedication and devotion. But it’s worth the effort because Capricorn women are loyal and will stick with you through thick and thin. She appreciates a hard working guy who has ambitions as well as old fashioned values. Tradition is very important to Capricorn women, especially when it comes to raising a family and taking care of older relatives. If you're interested in a Cappy gal, know that if you marry her, you will be marrying into the entire family. You will come first but family ties run deep and she may feel obligated to take care of everyone’s needs. AquariusThe Aquarius ManThe Aquarius men are real men; kinda like the Marlboro man; strong and silent. Some of them are quite cocky and a few have mean streaks. Most of all Aquarius men like to do things their way. They have strong opinions about things. They want to leave their mark in the world. Many Aquarius I have counseled do not have a desire to have children. They’d prefer to be free from any responsibilities that would hinder them from going after their goals. But those that do have kids can be tough parents but supportive. The Aquarius man is a "know it all". He is intelligent and has an opinion on everything. If you want to win his heart, let him talk and make him feel what he has to say is very important. Here’s a guy that appreciates his freedom so don't pressure him into a commitment or be overly demanding of his time. There are two types of Aquarius men; extroverted and introverted. If yours is friendly and outgoing, you may have to compete for his time and attention with the many friends he has. Join in the group and learn to like his quirky buddies. If he’s the quiet type, give him space when he needs it. Did you know this guy’s a computer genius? Better make sure you have an e-mail address. The Aquarius man is known to spend hours on line.
The Aquarius WomanShe’s a free spirit and devoted her to her causes and friends. If she can fit you in her busy schedule, great! If not, you'll have to prove that you're even worthy of her precious time. The way to win her heart is to be her friend first. Have conversations about astrology, the world, your relationship and deep topics. She'll be direct with words so don't mince yours. She likes a strong self assured man with a tender side. Show her both. She craves change so whatever you do, don't get stuck in a boring dating routine. Make sure to liven things up every other weekend. Try new things. She doesn't mind flying solo and likes her independence. Forget mind games and playing hard to get. Honesty with an Aquarius woman is always the best policy. She’s not as much into money and financial security than some of the other zodiac signs. She’s looking for a deeper, more spiritual bond with her lover. And yes, although she may not always admit it, she believes in the theory of soul mates and desperately wants to find him one day!Best Bets - Aries, Gemini, Aquarius Fast Fizzles - Cancer, CapricornOpposite Attraction - LibraPast Life Probability - CapricornBest Times of the Year for loveJuly 23- August 23Got a personal question Aquarius? PiscesThe Pisces Man The Pisces man may be the most romantic guy on the face of the earth. Ruled by Neptune, he believes in all of the mushy stuff dreams are made of. Pisces men at their best are kind, gentle, intuitive and dreamy. At their worst, they drink too much, are moody and whine a lot. If you've fallen hard for a Fish, expect him to be very romantic and wine and dine you. He is apt to be loyal and loving yet vulnerable and sensitive. It’s very likely he’s been hurt in a past relationship and has some "baggage" to deal with. He is the type of guy that wants to spend all of his waking moments with you. For free spirited girls, this may be a little suffocating. But for those that crave constant attention and love to be lavished with affection, Mr. Pisces will go to ends of the earth to please you.
The Pisces WomanThis romantic woman loves to please her man. However, she is easily drawn to the "bad boys" and often finds herself in bad relationships. If there’s a messed up, mixed up guy, a Pisces woman will be sure to draw him. The needier they are the better! This woman will be unselfishly loyal, often forgoing some of her dreams and desires to help her mate. She'll stick by him through thick and thin. She’s also extremely intuitive but even though she has this gift of extra sensory perception, she can be very insecure. She lives for romance and probably has been dreaming of her Prince Charming since she was a little girl. She a strong believer in soul mates. Even though she likes the finer things in life, she’s much more interested in finding true love than a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Sometimes she’s gullible and easily taken advantage of. She will have heartache but has the resilience to bounce back time and time again, still believing in "happily ever after". She can be smothering when in love and will sacrifice all for the man Who captures her heart.Best Bets - Cancer, Scorpio, Taurus Fast Fizzles - Sagittarius, GeminiOpposite Attraction - VirgoPast Life Probability -AquariusBest Times of the Year for loveJune 22- July 22August 23- September 22Got a personal question Pisces? Minestrone...
Minestrone
Serves 8
My husband and I used to go to a little Italian restaurant in Detroit called Salvatore Scaloppini. They made a minestrone soup that we just loved. I tried to recreate it at home and finally got the creamy smoky flavor of their soup by adding an 11.25-ounce can of Bean with Bacon soup. Try it- it’s a deliciously different alternative.
Prep time: 20 minutesCook time: 45 minutesMake ahead: Tastes best made one day ahead.Tip: Keep a pot of homemade soup in the fridge all the time. Besides making an easy dinner, I like to eat soup for a snack- it’s low calorie and packed with veggies.
1 tablespoon olive oil 1 medium onion, chopped4 garlic cloves, minced 1 teaspoon dried oregano 2 medium yellow squash, chopped2 medium zucchini, chopped1 carrot, peeled and chopped 1 14.5-ounce can diced tomatoes 1 14.5-ounce can tomato puree8 cups chicken broth1/2 cup uncooked ditalini or other small tubular pasta
1 15.5-ounce can Great Northern or cannelini beans, rinsed and drained 2 large handfuls fresh spinach, roughly chopped ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1 teaspoon salt Freshly ground black pepper
Parmesan or Asiago cheese
Heat oil in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add onion, garlic and oregano; sauté 5 minutes or until onion is soft. Stir in squash, zucchini and carrot; sauté 7 minutes or until vegetables are crisp tender. Add diced tomatoes, tomato puree and broth; bring mixture to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer 20 minutes. Add pasta, beans, spinach, crushed red pepper flakes, salt and several grinds of back pepper; cook 12-14 minutes or until pasta is tender, stirring occasionally.
To Serve: Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese.

Rebound relationships...
HUGE thanks to Samantha who emailed in today to talk about rebound romances. Do they work? Don't they work? Everyone called in with this one and it was a GREAT topic. Samantha found a really great guy and doesn't know about dating him because she just broke up with her boyfriend about 2 months ago. Hopefully Samantha took the advice of our callers and will make the right decision. Rebounds are tricky...
Oscar nominations...
Thanks to Los Angeles acting coach Howard Fine who called Jeff and Jenn's Hollywood Hotline to report the Oscar nominations which came out today. Best of luck to George Clooney, our local boy, who's nominated for Best Actor for Michael Clayton. The Oscars happen February 24th.
Tom Brady...
Looks like Tom Brady has a boo boo. Superbowl bound quarterback Tom Brady from the New England, Patriots was caught in New York yesterday sporting an air cast. The Patriots have no comment but Tom definitely is wearing a cast. He's also been camped out with supermodel/ girlfriend Gieselle. The happy couple has been seen romping all over New York City which is funny because the Patriots rival for the Superbowl is the New York, Giants.

Delta...
It was in the paper today that Delta is in nervous talks with Northwest about a merger. What does this mean to the tri-state? It looks having Delta as a hub at CVG might be a thing of the past. Also it might be that some of the Delta jobs will be gone as well. Stay tuned for more info.
American Idol...
"American Idol" was in Dallas last night and the auditions were great! My favorite was the guy Douglas who had to be escorted from the room.

Mr. Moviefone said today that most of the movies coming out in theatres today are not that good. Sadly this includes "The Bucket List" which I thought was going to be good. He still recommends going to see "Juno."
Zac Efron...
Zac Efron from "High School Musical" fame is giving some kissing pointers. He told "J-14" magazine to "Be respectful of the other person and don't just get on in and grope all over the place." "Don't try to swallow the person you're kissing by opening your mouth so wide!" and Lastly, Zac said he doesn't like it when girls "rotate their tongues around your mouth like a washing machine." And there's your kissing insight from Zac Efron, cute, hun!

Making love in the rain under a tin roof

11 "Don't Tell the Husband" Secrets...
We women are well aware that most of the time we're a profound mystery to men. And for the most part, we like it that way. But the thought has occurred to just about every woman: Would it really be so bad if he knew _________ about me? Wouldn't it help him understand me better? And, more important, Wouldn't he annoy me less if he knew what I really wanted? So, for the benefit of women everywhere (and for your benefit too, guys — remember, a happy woman makes for a much happier man), we're going to let men in on a little of what really makes us tick, deep down. Read on for 11 near-universal secrets of womankind. Some may shock you, others may be things you've suspected for a long time (but never had the nerve to ask about). But know this: the woman in your life? She's hiding more secrets than these, including a few you'd never imagine. Lucky you — you get to spend a lifetime learning them all.
1. Everything we buy for ourselves — shoes, a skirt, even just stuff from the drugstore — really costs 20 percent more than we tell you it did.Just because it's a classic sitcom plot doesn't mean it isn't true. "Sometimes I'll buy an outfit and charge half of it on our credit card and pay for the other half in cash so my husband doesn't know what I'm actually spending," admits one 32-year-old, who requested anonymity to protect her sneaky secret. Yeah, we know honesty is the best policy, hiding your spending habits is bad, blah blah blah. But sometimes we just don't want the hassle of arguing over the price of the fancy shampoo. Is that so wrong? We don't think so.
2. We actually think about sex — with you! — a lot. Sometimes we think about it all day long. It's just that by the end of the day we're too damn tired to do anything about it. Now, if you could only catch us at lunchtime....
3. We're just as nervous about commitment as you are.True, many girls grow up dreaming of Prince Charming, the white wedding, and happily ever after. But we're human, just like you, and when it comes down to the reality of tying our life to another person's, we get scared, too. "The idea of getting married completely freaked me out at first," says my friend Lisa, 34. "I know this sounds like a guy cliché, but I saw it as giving up my independence and being tied down." The good news is, once we're hitched, we're generally pretty delighted about it. Says Lisa, "Now that I am married, having a life commitment is so comforting and wonderful. I love knowing that we are a team and that we're going to be on the same team forever."
4. We may be modern and independent, but we still want you to be "the man."We do want you to be sensitive, caring 21st-century males, but even the most ass-kicking, take-no-prisoners woman still wants to feel taken care of by her man somehow. Whether that means you take charge in bed, know how to fix the car and kill spiders, or even just carry the big suitcase when we're on vacation — when you act all manly, even if you're 98 pounds soaking wet, it makes us feel more feminine, more safe."I love that my friends and family always comment on how my husband opens the door for me and does all kinds of other chivalrous things — especially when I was pregnant, when he was so protective of me and my belly," says Lorraine, 29, of New Hartford, NY. "At the end of the day, being in his strong arms is definitely a good feeling, no matter how independent I know I am."
5. Our ex-boyfriends were not completely terrible in bed.You know how we're always telling you things like, "Oh, yeah, you're definitely the biggest I've ever had," or "No one does it like you do"? Um, yeah. Well, we may have been stretching the truth just a teensy bit. But we'll never actually tell you that a past lover was a bedroom dynamo — we're smarter than that. Just know that whatever toe-curling orgasms the other guy gave us, sex with you really is a million times better — because it's you, and you're the one we really want.
6. We're scared that we'll turn into our mothers. We love our mothers, really. We admire them, we're grateful to them, we think they're the most amazing women on the planet. We just don't want to be them. That's why one of the worst insults you can hurl at a woman is, "You're acting just like your mother." But here's one that's even worse: "You're acting just like my mother." It sends a horrible oedipal shiver down our spines — did he marry me because I'm like his mom? Will he start expecting me to cut the crusts off his PB&J? So, please, if you value your sex life, never ever compare your wife to your mother. Out loud, anyway.
7. We want you to be jealous — but just a little bit.We want you to notice — and care! — when the waiter flirts with us, or when other guys check us out on the street. It makes us feel that we matter to you. But please don't get all Neanderthal and possessive on us. "I'm very loyal, and if my guy can't understand that I would never do anything with anyone else, then that just makes me mad," says Paulina, 22, from Brooklyn. So, to recap: Raising your eyebrows when we introduce you to our cute coworker — good. Punching him out — very, very bad.
8. Yes, we fantasize about hot celebrity guys, but that doesn't mean we want you to be them.Christian Bale is sexy and all, but can you imagine having to clean that Batcave?
9. We tell our girlfriends more than we admit to you (but less than you fear).Yes, we tell them about the latest marital spat, complain about our mothers-in-law, and sigh over the hobby that sucks up all your free time. But we don't tell them how big your you-know-what is or that you cried in our arms when your dad died. Some things are just too important and intimate to share. "I definitely don't tell my girlfriends details like what my husband said when he proposed, the feeling I have every time I see him look at our daughter, and the little wonderful things he does for me every day," says Lorraine. "Those are just for me."
10. We really do notice and appreciate all the chores you do.Why don't we say so often enough? Because we can't get over all the things you don't do. My husband, for example, is incredibly diligent about keeping a 6-by-10-foot carpeted patch of our apartment vacuumed and cat hair-free, and I love that. But it kills me that it never occurs to him to dust the furniture sitting on top of that piece of carpet, or to sweep the hardwood floor adjoining it. Blame our lack of positive feedback on that stubborn female belief that there is Only One Right Way to do any given household task — our way. It's probably the real reason why men don't shoulder a greater share of housekeeping duties; we complain about how you did it wrong, so you never want to do it again. (Sounds familiar, right?) Let's make a deal: You promise to dust the lampshade (or wipe down the kitchen counter after you wash the dishes, or take out the garbage and then put a new liner in the can) once in a while, and we promise to sing your praises. Agreed?
11. We love you with all our hearts, but we still get wistful about the fact that we'll never feel that falling-in-love sizzle and spark again.I'll just come right out and say it: Most women are love addicts. And while we appreciate the depth and richness of long-time love, there is simply nothing like the giddy, fluttery, crazy feeling we get (or rather, used to get) with a brand-new guy. We know we'll never feel that high again, and there's a little part of us that will always miss it. (Why do you think we watch so many romantic comedies?) But in the end, what we get instead — you, and a lifetime of true devotion — is more than worth the price.
